Sylvie Toutain's studio practice arises form the everyday experience in the city, where alienation combines with moments of intimacy. Journeys through urban environments become translated into drawings in space, where drawing is a process of questioning. Her work is based on narrative: it is a voyage into a state of mind that combines poetry and reality and always questioning the trace between what we see and what we perceive in the everyday life. The use of multi-media within Toutain’s practice allows her to express the obsession she has in trying to understand the void between the physical body and the surrounding architecture.
Sylvie Toutain studied for 2 years Landscaping and 4 years in Interior Design in France before moving to England in 1994. She recently graduated from the BA Fine Art course at Chelsea College of Art 7& Design, where she was awarded the 'Photofusion Chelsea Bursary' from her award winning degree show. Other awards have included 'The Peter Stanley Award' in 2011. She has participated in various group exhibitions including 'CGP', 'London Gallery' and 'Photofusion SALON/14'. She currently lives and works in London.
