|THE ZEITGEIST OPEN 2012 - Curatorial Statement|
We are delighted to announce the launch of a new open submission exhibition for all artists called: The Zeitgeist Open 2012. The exhibition is being organised and curated by Rosalind Davis and Annabel Tilley of Zeitgeist Arts Projects, based in South London. Davis founded the original Core Gallery Open 2010 & 2011
In recent years there have been a proliferation of Open competitions and so-called 'opportunities' for artists. "One just feels like a number and a pound sign", says Davis. In developing The Zeitgeist Open
, Davis and Tilley have looked anew at the ethos of the Open Submission experience in terms of how artists are treated, valued and supported before, during and after the event. And how it might be possible for ZAP to lead by example to create longer-term opportunities for the artists involved. As a result, at least 10 artists from The Zeitgeist Open
will be selected for our next ZAP group exhibition: Discernible
in Spring 2013.
Through their ambitious new project, Davis and Tilley are determined to make the process of judging as fair and transparent as possible; to create long term opportunities for artists, and new networks for the artists who take part:
What is different about The Zeitgeist Open?
- There will be no pre-selection, all works will be seen by all the judges
- The work received will remain anonymous throughout the judging process
- Our judges are artists, not art oligarchs or celebrities
- ZAP values all the artists we work with and continues to build relationships with them during and after shows
- Between 40 - 50 artists will be selected to exhibit in November. A further 10 will be selected from The Zeitgeist Open exhibition for our next ZAP group exhibition: Discernible in Spring 2013
- The ZAP philiosophy is about: Creating opportunities for ambitious artists,
creating new networks and bringing new audiences – curators, gallerists, collectors, the general public - to artists
- Submission fees have been kept to an absolute minimum. £15 or £12 for ZAP/DIY Educate Members to make it accessible as possible
The 2012 judges are Alistair Gentry, artist, writer and cultural commentator. David Kefford, artist and co-founder of Aid and Abet
, Cambridge. Both are members of Market Project
; ZAP artists & curators, Annabel Tilley and Rosalind Davis; and artist Graham Crowley who will also be returning as a judge this year. Crowley has been working closely with the DIY Educate project since its inception at Core Gallery two years ago. (Biogs below)
The ZAP Judges were chosen for their achievements as artists as well as the ways in which they support and nurture other artists, and for the long term connections that can be made between them and the selected artists. Davis & Tilley said: "We want the measured judgment of practising artists and curators. Individuals who are aware of fine art practice, painterly conventions, precedence, history, innovation, context and criticality."

It's all about the art."

Working with Core Gallery gave me a huge boost both in professional confidence and critical ability. This is a not-for-profit open submission exhibition. All revenue raised will be used to cover the real cost of financing an exhibition of this type in terms of project management fees, admin help, an honorarium for the judges, an online catalogue, print, publicity, and postage etc, with any remainder being reinvested into the 2013 ZAP Exhibition and Talk programme. It should recognised that there are always costs and labour involved in any kind of exhibition.
In an open exhibition where there is no theme beyond a group of works chosen for their originality and the curiosity of the artist for their subject matter, materials and execution; Davis & Tilley seek to build relationships between artworks so that the final exhibition is one of harmony, debate, dialogue, contrasts and engagement with subject matter. At least 10 artists from The Zeitgeist Open will be selected for our next ZAP group exhibition: Discernible
in Spring 2013. The Zeitgeist mission is to work with artists to help sustain their careers. We promote, nurture and bring together and or put them in touch directly or indirectly with galleries, curators and collectors to help them create new networks and to continue to advise them on their practice as well as share opportunities. ZAP has formed strong links to other artist-led spaces and arts organisations. Many artists that ZAP’s Davis & Tilley have worked with in other events over the years were also exhibited as part of Collectible where 25% of work was sold.
The Zeitgeist Open 2012 follows in the footsteps of the original Core Gallery Open, founded and organised in 2010/11 by artist & curator, Rosalind Davis.
The Core Gallery Open 2010 & 11 selected 41 successful and promising artists who also believed in the ethos and generosity of the space, amongst which included:

Previous judges have included: Matt Roberts (Matt Roberts Arts), Kate Jones (John Jones), Sarah Williams, artist/curator (Jerwood Space); Alli Sharma artist/curator (Transition Gallery); Fiona MacDonald, artist/curator (Standpoint Gallery) as well as Graham Crowley, artist and former professor of painting at the RCA.

is an artist, lecturer and co-Director of artist-run space, Aid & Abet in Cambridge. He graduated from the MA Fine Art course at the University of Brighton in 1999 and is alumnus of Wysing Arts Centre. Kefford’s work has been extensively exhibited and commissioned in various contexts throughout the UK and more recently in North America and Europe; including artist-run project spaces, art fairs, commercial galleries, public art galleries/museums and the public realm. He has been the recipient of several prizes, grants and awards and selected for open submission competitions, including Kettle’s Yard Open, Mostyn Open and the Jerwood Drawing Prize. His work is held in a number of private and public collections.
is an artist and writer who works across multiple media and genres including photography, film making, performance, installation, documentary, storytelling, fiction, drama and more. He has worked with, exhibited at and been commissioned by galleries, festivals and agencies throughout the UK, Europe, China and Japan including La Biennale di Venezia, Creative Partnerships, AV Festival, Animate, Channel 4 Television, Art on the Underground and the International Symposium on Electronic Arts (ISEA). In 2004 he was awarded a Berwick Gymnasium Artist Fellowship. He has been artist in residence for galleries and institutions including ArtSway, New Media Scotland, The University of Edinburgh's Genomics Policy & Research Forum, KINO Senter for Kunst og Film (Norway) and He Xiangning Art Museum in Shenzhen, China. His published works include two novels, a short story collection, art and photography books, crtical texts and the non-fiction book Career Suicide
, about the distinctly un-glamourous aspects of being an artist. In 2010 he was one of the artists who founded Market Project, a group researching, questioning and reporting on the economic and professional issues that affect artists.
was born in Romford in 1950. He studied at St. Martin's School of Art London 1968-72 and the Royal College of Art London 1972-75. He has held a number of significant teaching posts, most recently Professor of Painting at the RCA. (1998-2006) His paintings span a vast variance in style from the approprationist art of the 70s to his brilliantly luminous landscapes of the present day, tracking a fundamental narrative with political, cultural and personal histories within them. Crowley has exhibited internationally and extensively and curated 'Precious Things' in 2008 in Highlanes Gallery in Drogheda, Ireland. Crowley was a judge on the 25 John Moores panel in 2008. As an applicant he has exhibited eight times, winning prizes in 1987 and 2006. He has been part of just about every open, either as an exhibiting artist or on the selection panel.
makes drawings currently inspired by the history of English painting. Shortlisted for The 2005 Jerwood Drawing Prize, she has exhibited widely and undertaken several public commissions and residencies, including most recently in London/Berlin at fruehsorge contemporary drawing, Berlin & C4RD, London; Towner, Eastbourne and Hastings Museum. She has shown with Transition Gallery, Galerie8 & WW Gallery. In 2011, alongside Rosalind Davis, she co-founded Core Gallery's professional practice programme Show&Tell, co-curated the exhibition 'Home' before going on to launch ZeitgeistArtsProjects with Davis in 2012. She has written for Arty Magazine, Garageland and has been an online contributor for the Guardian
. Annabel Tilley is an AIR Council member. She trained in Fine Art Painting at University of Brighton, and her work is held in several private collections in the UK and USA.
is a graduate from the Royal College of Art and Chelsea College of Art. An artist, curator, award-winning blogger, writer, lecturer, member of the AIR Council and manager of Core Gallery from 2009-11, she has exhibited nationally and internationally and has work in private and public collections. Her work is currently on display in the Courtauld Institute until 2013. From 2009-11 Davis co-founded and managed Core Gallery a dynamic artist-led gallery space working in collaboration with over 200 artists and curators. Davis lectures for a number of organisations such as the Royal College of Art; University of the Arts, London; a-n The Artists Information Company and AIR. As a writer she has contributed to the Guardian
