Matthew Hill presents objects for people to 'encounter'; where meaning is not controlled and ideas are not illustrated. His working process involves observation and manipulation of objects and materials, allowing ideas and forms to suggest themselves. Some are rejected before realisation, while others are made and developed before any decision as to whether they will be fully resolved. Working in an exploratory way, Hill attempts to make objects that carry some visual cues to items recognisably fashioned by human hand but he avoids any reference to specifics. He combines elements normally understood to signify something, in configurations that signify nothing. Most recently, he has been making tiny alterations to found objects and readymades, to reveal aspects of them that are almost imperceptible, hoping that the viewer will encounter them as if seen for the first time.
Hill studied at Wimbledon School of Art and the University of East London gaining his BA Fine Art in 2001. Since then he has participated in Wimbledon Open Studios and was selected for ZAP Open 2014 by Juan Bolivar and Andrew Bick. Recently he exhibited in the group show 'Doppelganger', curated by Juan Bolivar and Richard Bateman at no format gallery.
