Abstract Landscape with Cloud
, 2014, charcoal on paper, 40.6x30.4cm
John Clark's work plays with simple motifs that often refer to the mythologies that saturate the modern workplace such as professionalism, teamwork, inclusion, commitment, and the quiet desperation these notions produce in a workforce for whom difficult questions of identity never seem far away. Sometimes these concerns give way to more dispassionate considerations arising out of the process and history of painting. More often they combine to produce objects whose meanings can be more slippery than their motifs suggest.
John Clark graduated from Oxford University (Distinction) in 1986. Since then he has exhibited extensively, recently touring his solo show 'The Sleep of Reason' to The Grafton Centre, Cambridge; The Norwood Club, New York; Konstnärshuset, Stockholm and others. As well as showing in Spain, Poland and Finland he has exhibited at The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition and has collaborated with Eton Shirts and been commissioned by Fields, Morris & Verdin. He has also had his work included in the publications Good Old Drawing
, From Killzone to Canvas
and Show me the Money.
